A little bruised ego on the football field…

Our first homegame for the junior high football team was tonight. All day long I was getting kids telling me how great we were and how we were going to cream the other team. Well in the first 2 minutes of the game the other team had scored 2 touchdowns. We ended up losing 0-34. Tomorrow I am sure I will hear all of the ‘I almost had it!” comments. Every time I go to a football game, or any sporting event for that matter, I am reminded about how lucky I was to have played in a school district that had money for extra curricular activities. The stadium at our school is aslab of concrete and the uniforms fit very few of the kids, and have the writing worn off of them. No one ever complains though, even when the team we play has nice new uniforms on. It’s nice to know, while they seem to whine about everything else, that the student body understands that the school dosen’t have money right now. I hope some day we will be able to improve athletics in our school. I feel that athletics is a good way to hold students into academics. Maybe that would help some kids have enough drive to get to high school. But when your teams don’t have the money to buy uniforms or appropriate facilities it is hard to get kids interested in athletics.
